Wetenschappers ontdekken ‘reuzenvirus’

AMSTERDAM – Franse onderzoekers hebben een reuzenvirus geïsoleerd dat is opgebouwd uit genetisch materiaal van planten, dieren en bacteriën.
De onderzoekers van de universiteit van Aix-Marseille ontdekten het nieuwe virus in amoebes, eencellig organismen die als parasiet kunnen voorkomen bij zowel mensen als dieren.

Het DNA van het ‘reuzenvirus’ bestaat uit maar liefst 368.000 basenparen en bevat genetisch materiaal van planten, dieren, bacteriën en andere virussen, dat zich in de amoebe kon combineren tot een nieuw organisme, zo meldt AFP.

De ontdekking van het nieuwe virus wordt beschreven in het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Het organisme, dat de naam Marseillevirus heeft gekregen, is volgens de onderzoekers het op vier na grootste virus ter wereld. Het organisme heeft een diameter van 250 nanometer (ongeveer 250 miljoenste millimeter) en is daardoor zichtbaar door een gewone optische microscoop.
De wetenschappers vermoeden dat amoebes een belangrijke bron zullen zijn voor de creatie van meer reuzenvirussen, omdat de organismen zich voeden met bacteriën en en virussen van verschillende soorten.
Ziekteverwekker
“Dit virus is een totaal nieuwe virale vorm”, zo verklaarde hoofdonderzoeker Didier Raoult tegen persbureau AFP.
“In amoebes is een proces van permanente creatie aan de gang, waardoor er een nieuw repertoire van virussen kan ontstaan. De reuzenvirussen kunnen uiteindelijk ziekteverwekkers worden als ze zich specialiseren”, aldus Raoult.(nu.nl)

Het zou interessant zijn om te weten wat de geschatte ouderdom van dit specifieke reuzenvirus als species is. De individuele delen van het genetisch materiaal uit die planten, dieren, bacteriën en andere virussen zou daarvoor als leidraad kunnen dienen.

She has refused to make further comments until after she speaks to her lawyer and obtains a pregnancy test.
