Conclusie:
As we have seen, the available evidence, allows for at
least two different interpretations, these overlap in
some parts, but are also mutually exclusive in others.
Moreover, both of them still do not offer any, even tentative,
hypothesis on the relationships of the Chordata
to the Echinodermata, though both are implicitly or explicitly
contrary to any direct relationship between
Chordata and carpoids (Calcichordata of Jefferies, 1986).
We have candidly pointed to both the difficulties and
limitations of these interpretations, and we have thus
pointed to the essential queries to be answered by future
research. Palaeontological evidence is rapidly accruing,
though still to some extent dependent on the
chance of further and better findings. However, the reexamination
of available specimens, may well allow for
Downloaded by the improvement and better evaluation of the different
hypotheses, while it will clearly be the task for the comparative
anatomist to find on living animals the conclusive
evidence for either proving or disproving such
tempting, albeit controversial hypotheses as we have
outlined.
