Children will learn to apply the scientific method to the world around them. They will see for themselves how species adapt, develop variation and submit to selection. They will see, through their own actions, the fundamental and undeniable principles that drive evolution.
It is called the Great Plant Hunt and I am launching it at St Jude's primary school in London. I can't wait to see the excitement among the staff and children. By the end of March, every primary school in Britain will have received a free Darwin Treasure Chest for its pupils so everyone can join in.
Children in the middle of the city will be just as able as those in the countryside to explore their surroundings, following in Darwin's footsteps but using some of the skills and techniques of modern- day scientists.
