FEINSTEIN: Why didn't you stop and say, Mr. President, this is wrong. I cannot discuss this with you?
COMEY: That's a great question. Maybe if I were stronger, I would have.
Comey verklaart waarom hij memos naar buiten heeft gebracht:
COLLINS: Did you show copies of your memos to anyone outside of the department of justice?
COMEY: Yes.
COLLINS: And to whom did you show copies?
COMEY: The president tweeted on Friday, after I got fired, that I better hope there's not tapes. I woke up in the middle of the night on Monday night, because it didn't dawn on me originally, that there might be corroboration for our conversation, there might be a tape. And my judgment was needed to get that out into the public square. So I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. I didn't do it myself for a variety of reasons, but I asked him to because i thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel, so I asked a close friend of mine to do it.
Comey’s impressies betreffende zijn dinner met Trump:
COMEY: My impression, and again it’s my impression, I could always be wrong, told me that what was going on is either he had concluded or someone had told him that you didn’t — you’ve already asked Comey to stay and you didn’t get anything for it. And that the dinner was an effort to build a relationship. In fact, he asked specifically of loyalty in the context of asking me to stay.
Comey zegt dat zijn functie naar zijn gevoel afhing van loyaliteit aan Trump:
WYDEN: Did that dinner suggest that your job might be contingent on how you handled the investigation?
COMEY: I don’t know that I’d go that far. I got the sense that my job would be contingent upon how he felt I conducted myself and whether I demonstrated loyalty. But I don’t know I would go so far as to connect it to the investigation.
Comey m.b.t. de tapes:
MANCHIN: Do you believe there were any tapes or recordings of your conversations with the president?
COMEY: It never occurred to me until the President's tweet. I'm not being facetious. I hope there are. I'll consent to the release.
MANCHIN: So, both of you are in the same findings here. You both hope there's tapes and recordings.
COMEY: Well, all I can do is hope. The President surely knows whether he taped me. And if he did, my feelings aren't hurt. Release all the tapes. I'm good with it.
En als reeds door Rereformed vermeld, had Comey de
openingsverklaring reeds een dag van tevoren naar buiten gebracht.
